First Day of Spring

I'm starting to feel sorry for the version of me that had no concept of life in a sprawling megalopolis without a car or without a cellular phone.

With a car it's easy to persistently avoid things like walking short distances; to pop out and buy things that one could life without, but are reasonable enough when they need only be tossed in the back seat to make it home; to exist almost entirely within yourself as you commute, no matter how short the trip. With a cellular phone few moments go by that are truly idle but there are plenty misspent. In the past few months I have spent less and engaged in my community much, much more. I've also been fiercely mood-swing-y and often depressed when putting to rest the issues that surrounded my car getting totaled.

Spring is coming along at just the right time. I have a better handle on me and am making plans to be proud of and excited for. Today I bought myself flowers just because and it feels wonderful. Tomorrow I will replace my cellular, but will hopefully not get so leashed to this one as I was to the last.

Monday I will renew proper efforts, etc., toward my 2010/long term goals:
- 1000 cranes folded and given by Thursday, September 27, 2012
- Leiden later this year
- Sunrise at the Grand Canyon for my birthday
- learn something new (at this point it's looking like bicycle maintenance)
- visiting each of my relatives on their terms at least once, plus Christmas

But along the way I am resolved make more of a point to enjoy myself. That will include trying ever dish on the menu at the pizza shop around the corner and buying flowers ever couple of weeks with the justification that this is much better use for my gas money.

The blog never actually known as "Fertile Dirt"

And so it begins.

First impetus to blog?: Friends indulge me in hearing about the goofy things I've seen or watched, either because I like goofy things or because I was morbidly curious at the time, and then friends occasionally laugh. I like making other people laugh.

Second impetus to blog?: While vacationing last fall, itself a journey of following where spirits might lead, I learned about Sadako Sasaki and the lore regarding folding a thousand paper cranes. My thinking is that if in the course of 1000 days I fold and give away 1000 paper cranes, I could begin fulfilling my own wish for world happiness by attempting to spread a little with each crane. And from there it seemed reasonable to consider posting pictures of the cranes and stories of the giving with some semblance of regularity. Maybe. Sometimes.

Third impetus to blog?: All the cool kids are doing it.
